what is seo and how it works

Doing SEO The Right Way – What Works at The Moment

Search Engine Optimization has been on since the beginning of blogging about a decade ago; and many webmasters have been on the move continually to game the system (search engines like google and yahoo).

It used to be quite easy. Keywords and meta tag stuffing; build a new site and blast it with links from all directions and up you go to the first page of the search engines even without quality content. It was quite cool those days; and every Tom, Dick and Harry where into it; with the big companies being the top culprits.

But Google and other search engines have gotten wiser.

Search engines want the best for its visitors, and because most of the SEOers were more concerned about being at the top than providing quality content, visitors were not getting what they really wanted.

And then came the clamp!

Google started rolling out its various animal updates; changing its algorithm and the way SEO is done forever. It was no more about the number of backlinks but more of unique content and quality. The good old days were gone, and if you really want to stay at the top of the search engines, you would need to evolve too.

Is SEO then dead? Of course not. In fact, it has become a lot easier if you are ready to do it right.

So, how is SEO done these days?

On – Page Optimization: Quality Content, Mobile Friendly and Fast Loading Sites

As mentioned earlier, SEO is no longer about blasting backlinks. It’s now more about unique quality content as emphasis is now more about providing value to the end users. With this, it becomes quite obvious that attention should be paid more to on-page optimization.

On-page optimization is simply improving on your on-page factors so as to climb up the search engines. This entails:

  • Building a site properly, and with all the needed pages as about us, contact us, terms of service, etc.
  • Filling all pages with unique content as well as writing quality articles for your site.
  • Using the right keywords and key phrases without stuffing
  • Using videos, pictures, infographics, etc. and all relevant to the content.
  • Building a mobile friendly and fast loading website

On – page SEO is very important and there is so much about it that we can’t just cover here now. If done well, you would need to do actually little about off – page optimization to get your site ranked.

I have just touched the skeletons here on what on – page optimization is all about, but I guess you get the idea.

Off – Page Optimization: Building Relevant Backlinks and Social Signals

Though backlinks are not the way they used to be, they are still very important to ranking your website; albeit they have to be relevant and quality backlinks.

Off – page optimization entails social signals, guests post, etc. It entails efforts to build relevant links to point to your website. This shows trust and builds authority. The more websites that points to your site, then the more value the search engines place on your site as it shows that your site is popular.

However, the links pointing to your site has to be relevant. If you are in the health niche, then links pointing to your website should be from health – related websites. Getting links from home improvement niche pointing to your health website wouldn’t bring much value to your site. In fact, getting so many irrelevant links could even get your website penalized.

So, What’s The Way Forward?

The way forward to really rank your sites is to bring value to your visitors by providing good content. You can do this by writing unique and engaging articles. Also, build your site the SEO way; it should be mobile optimized, fast loading and with all needed pages.

Once the on – page factors has been taken care of, then build quality relevant links as well as social signals to your site.

It also pays to continually update your website with fresh content.

No matter the kind of site you are building or running, SEO is a must; whether knowing or unknowingly. Gaming the search engines is no longer the ideal thing but providing quality.

We are going to be talking more about various aspects of SEO in this site.
